Non-profit Board Responsibilities - Overview of Non-profit Board Governance
iang's ideas
Think of the board as *governance*. That is, it governs the existing assets. In this role, probably its most important decision is to say "NO" or "YES." What the board wants to see is a steady series of projects that are more or less complete, and what they need is a rubber stamp of approval. This is the hubristic view of the board, but when you get on there, you'll realise how useful this is.
Hence, there are some don'ts:
- What we don't want to see is half-completed projects. OK, we can probably tell you why there are gaps there. But the role of the board is to stop stuff that is ill-thought out, and encourage stuff that is good and complete.
- Coming to the board looking for resource is a complete waste of time, and damaging. The board isn't a resource. The board should always say "GO AWAY," you should take your project back to the community. The members are the resource.
- Some people think that the board members as individuals are also resources to be tapped. No. They are too busy. Being on the board means they have a big stack of issues to get through -- governance, wanting to say YES, but saying NO. It doesn't mean they are available to help your project, and if you succeed in distracting the board, then you probably succeed in slowing down some other important work.
- if you think your project will only go ahead if you can get rubber-stamp approval, then you need to rethink the project. Go to the community, build support there.
