Ideas to do
01-07 Grants
In the last meeting of the committee, the treasurer asked for ideas to get more money, as (01) membership fees and current (02) donations do not cover the hosting costs (and collect them on both, board-list and board-private-list.
That is was I found just yesterday. It is more for a concrete project (f.eg. replicate the keygen-tag), not really to cover hosting costs. We can try to get some funding:
03 https://renewablefreedom.org/contact/ - The "Renewable Freedom Foundation" granted 5000 € to a group of people that wants to create a free certificate authority in Austria. This foundation writes "We do not accept unsolicited requests for funding at this time." -- 2019 additional note: However, contact with Moritz Bartl was positive in regards to a possible collaboration. -- Frédéric Dumas 2019-06-26 12:47:00

we should propagate more our donations we have: so to inform users, we have a point with booking.com and each member should try to use this bookingsystem we get clicks paid from google, but must of us use to use an adblocker or more. so to switch it off on cacert-pages. (GuKKDevel)
08-10 Money for CAcert
Again (but another e-mail as that just before!): In the last meeting of the committee, the treasurer asked for ideas to get more money, as membership fees and current donations do not cover the hosting costs (and collect them on both, board-list and board-private-list.
- 08 Probabely it would help, when the treasurer sends the invoices for the annual fee early this year, so money comes early as well.
- 09 Enlarge CAcert Inc.: The community has hundreds or even thousends more members than the association. It's a reservoir to attract more members.
- 10 Offer a kind of sponsorship for community members: Silver-Donator for 5€, Gold-Donator for 11€, Titan-Donator for 55 €, Platinum-Donator for 111 € (annually by standing order).
Any other ideas?
Best regards Etienne
- Money for CAcert, Etienne R, 01/30/2018
Comment: The idea is: "give 11 instead 10" or 22 instead 20 or 55 instead 50 for a little bit of honor
Alex:
08-10bis.1 On any wiki site add a "Support CAcert" logo linking to a donation page (regard https://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.4/mod/mod_remoteip.html linking to https://www.apache.org/foundation/contributing.html)
11 Crowd funding
(11) I contacted someone who has substantial experience in crowd funding. The summary of that conversation is that there are a number of very useful crowd funding platforms (eg gofundme and kickstarter), but the engine of all successful campaigns is social media. As a person with no genuine exposure to social media I will have to pass that over to those that do. My acquaintance thought that an appeal from CAcert would generate interest, but needed a significant social media following to get it started. Perhaps an appeal to the community to put the campaign out to social media might work?
Regards, Peter

Dear CAcert community member,
we are proud in beeing a nonprofit Organisation and to provide you all with a certificate at no charge, we believe in beeing saver than any other certification authority as we have a big web-of-trust in background.
Though we do not pay the people who do all the work, and it is much work for so few people who there are providing us, we have to pay money for the equipment we need to hold available for instance a server, also we have to pay for the data traffic we produce as each mail produces costs.
Until now we had some income from Google AdSense, provisions from booking.com, and last but not least the membership fees of the members from CAcert INC..
But as we get less money from our provisions we want you to inform about some sponsoring links and plead with you to use those links as often as you can.
At the moment we only have one affiliate booking.com, so please if you use this booking-site with the following link https://www.booking.com/index.html?aid=346253. You don't pay more but support CAcert.
Most of us have an ad-blocker active if we are surfing, but CAcert gets money from Google AdSense if one surfs un our sites with blocker disabled. So please if you are looking on our websites, switch your adblockers off.
Also we want to ask you to give us a donation if you can afford it. We can be donated at paypal: paypal@cacert.org.
hope we did not startle you, but we are running out of money in a short period, and would have to shut CAcert down.
omit question mark and reverse write "membership fees from member of CAcert Inc. and also provisions from partners like booking. com" - not quite correct, the other is advertising revenue. Is that somehow possible in a half-sentence like "advertisments and provsisions" without naming a partner? Or rather the three Call advertising partners? Otherwise booking.com is better placed and there there is only revenue from using the right affiliate tag (aid=). "running out of money" is probably important. I would rather not write "in a short period" and "would have to shut CAcert down" I would rather leave out, even if it is the consequence of course and maybe "hard words" are also important.
questionmarks were meant as placeholders to fill in the correct names of and links to sponsors, donators or other incomes I don't know the correct names and kinds of
By this we should name our affiliate partners more prominent on our first Page and not on a page you have to search for.
I thought this consequence should be made really clear to all community members, as all of them are affected by this
But we should also give statement about the difference to letsencrypt (the other free of charge CA) and our advantage thereby/packed (GuKKDevel)

13 Stay in contact
(13) Treasurer should send a thank-you-mail to each donator in 2-4 days. He should name the donator, say thank you and give a short overview for what the money is used. If possible in the main languages (english, german, any more?) (E.R.)
(13a) There could also be a list of donators in Wiki or on Main-site (GuKKDevel)
14 Gifts
(14) Donors can get a gift that someone is donating. For example: The first three donors starting next Monday will receive an image/original photograph/... from xyz. Or: Among all donors of the month April we raffle 1 xyz coffee machine, 1 xyz software license and 3 10$-xyz-store value cards. (E.R.)
15 Licence fees
(15) As we know, not only CAcert is affected by Bug 1417. Some of our people are working with high pressure on a solution. If it works, we may be able to license the solution non-exclusively to other affected CAs. I am thinking here of royalties (money) or a non-monetary gift (cross-signature of the root certificate). (E.R.)
16 Blog
(16) My idea was to "pin" the first blog-entry to donation ... otherwise it will scroll out as soon as there are more blog-entries. (egal) Note 2019: done as soon as proposed -- Frédéric Dumas 2019-09-01 08:25:38
17 Mailings from and to Brian
Since there are quite a few on this list who have either performed CAcert Assurances or had one performed for themselves, I thought that I would ask where the wind was blowing these days. I might ramble, so please bear with me. For the people who aren't aware, I will quote from the website: cacert.org: ===== CAcert.org is a community-driven Certificate Authority that issues certificates to the public at large for free. CAcert's goal is to promote awareness and education on computer security through the use of encryption, specifically by providing cryptographic certificates. These certificates can be used to digitally sign and encrypt email, authenticate and authorize users connecting to websites and secure data transmission over the internet. Any application that supports the Secure Socket Layer Protocol (SSL or TLS) can make use of certificates signed by CAcert, as can any application that uses X.509 certificates, e.g. for encryption or code signing and document signatures. ===== There are effectively two levels of membership in CAcert. The first is membership in the Community, which gives you the ability to create and use X.509 certificates issued by CAcert on your behalf. Beyond that, Community Members may voluntarily assist with donations of money, time or goods, because there is always work to be done and expenses to be paid. For instance, all Community Members are automatically members of the Policy Committee, and may participate in discussions and votes on the Policies of CAcert, as they choose. The second level of membership is that of Membership in CAcert, Inc., the non-profit organization that manages the assets and operations of CAcert, and was formed fifteen years ago. Membership involves an application and a nominal annual fee, and allows voting in the Annual General Meeting and other such meetings. That membership also allows membership in the Board of Directors. OK, now that I have discussed some history and background, I want to ask my question, for both the people who have participated or are currently participating in CAcert in some way, and for those who have not. Considering that there are services such as Let's Encrypt, which offers an X.509 Certificate for "free" to anyone, for a short, renwable, period, is CAcert's Web of Trust, Community and independence from commercial Certificate Authorities such as Verisign, still attractive to the TriLUG community and the world at large? I look forward to a lively discussion, as we frequently have here.
SSL has two primary, orthogonal functions: 1) Keep outsiders from listening in on our conversation 2) Assure one or both of us that the other is who they claim to be Certificates are most important in part (2), though common SSL setups require a certificate to exist even to do part (1). Let's Encrypt facilitates part (1), but by offering "an X.509 Certificate for 'free' to anyone," does little or nothing to uphold part (2). CACert's value is in being a noncommercial broker of part (2).
