- Complaint:
Emergency access was made to CAcert critical systems.
Visit date & time:
- 27.06.2009, 20:50 - 21:05 CEST
Persons:
- Bas van den Dikkenberg (Oophaga) Wytze van der Raay (CAcert)
Actions performed:
- checked status of signing server, which was reported as unavailable
- around 18:00 CEST. We found that the machine had rebooted itself, but could not complete the reboot sequence because this requires the file system encryption passwords to be entered locally by a critical systems administrator. After entering these we restored the service around 20:55. We inspected the system logs to find out what caused the system to do a reboot, but we found no clues at all. Most likely explanation for this reboot thus appears to be a hardware glitch, identical to what happened earlier this month on June 12, see:
https://lists.cacert.org/wws/arc/cacert-systemlog/2009-06/msg00007.html Since we have experienced this problem now twice within three weeks, a replacement of the signing server's core hardware may be necessary to reduce system outages to an acceptable level.
